Leadership Resources & Links

I’ve assembled a series of links for those interested in some further reading and research.  This is a work in progress (not as well organized as it could be!), and I welcome suggestions for additions. I would also be interested in discussing link-trade agreements with compatible sites - just see the instructions here - A. J. Schuler, Psy. D., May 2003

My passion is helping my clients and audiences learn about ways to:

  • build high performance business cultures
  • manage change successfully
  • develop their personal abilities
  • become excellent leaders
  • help others become their best

I don’t care if they learn it from me, or if they learn it from somewhere or someone else. On my site, in my articles, in my newsletters, I often mention other authors or resources, and so I want to make them available to my site visitors here.

A. J. Schuler, Psy. D.

Links to terrific books and book summaries:

Diffusion of Innovations,  by  Everett M. Rogers
This is a terrific book, whose core concepts I use to teach change management communications to my clients.  The chagne adoption cycle described by Rogers is a great model, backed up by research.

Leading Change, by John P. Kotter
Kotter is a terrific writer and researcher on organizational change. His new book, “The Heart of Change” is also a very strong resource.

Built To Last, by James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras
Good To Great, by James C. Collins
Jim Collins may be my favorite management writer, taking the place of Peter Drucker, whose ability to stay away from fads and fashions has always been terrific.  Collins is a terrific researcher, and has done a lot to elevate the quality of much of the management literature out there.

Organizing Genius, by Warren Bennis
Bennis’ book is a great study - using case studies - of what makes great project groups great.  One of the things I like most about both Bennis’ book and the works of Jim Collins is that they both understand how make-or-break important it is to select the right people, and to give them the right opportunities to shine with their strengths.  So many companies hire badly and then try to overcome their mistakes through training - an extraordinary waste of time, energy and money! As my former mentor, Dr. William E. Hall used to say, “People change, but seldom.  Hire as is, and if you get change, it’s a bonus!” I’m also a psychologist, and while many psychologists who think they know business will tell you anyone can be trained, I’m here to tell you that training will not change people, it can only refine genuine, pre-existing talents.  Training is very important - just be sure you’re training the right people in the right skills.

The HP Way, by David Packard
Another strong case study in building a high performance organizational culture. Though Packard’s story is a bit dated, it still brings out some timeless principles that go beyond mere management fashions.
