What I Stand For:

What I Stand For:A. J. Schuler, Psy. D.

I used to think that helping people meant working with them on their weaknesses.  That’s what most psychologists are trained to do. But now I know that building on strengths is the most powerful way to help people and organizations grow and succeed.

I have a confession to make: my office is a mess.  I’m terrible when it comes to organizing papers and files. You can send me to 100 Franklin Covey classes - but I’ll still have papers everywhere! That kind of detailed organizing will never be a strength for me, though I’m sure I can make some small improvements with a lot of work and effort.

But I’d be wasting my time!

Why? Because all the time and effort I might put into making color-coded file markers is time I could use to write a new speech, or develop a new seminar, or guide another organization through a major change or restructuring.

Those are the things I do best, and I love doing them. And since that’s where my talents lie, I can get a lot better a lot faster working on those things, instead of trying to keep my Palm Pilot up to date.

The same principle holds true for you, and for your organization:  maximizing your strengths is your surest road to greatness.

Here’s the real secret: the remedial approach to helping people and organizations achieve success has its place, just as emergency surgery does.

But just as health is more than the absence of disease, so too is success more than just the absence of failure.

The real path to greatness lies in what I call Growth Architecture® - the art and science of applied positive psychology to the success of individuals and organizations.

I started my career as a businessperson: I helped develop a small home improvement business in New York as I completed my undergraduate degree in Management from Wharton.

But I wanted to learn more about what makes people really tick.

So after two years as a full-time volunteer working with homeless and runaway youth, I completed my Doctor of Psychology degree from C. W. Post University in New York - always knowing I would put my psychological training together with my business background to help individuals and organizations achieve excellence.

Then I had the opportunity to learn from one of the most unknown but influential psychologists of the 20th Century - Dr. William E. Hall - and I started to put all the pieces together.

I served a thriving international consulting business as Operations Director, and together with my associates, we tripled the size of the company, brought excellence to our clients and helped The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company win the Malcolm Baldrige Award for Quality in Service.

Now, as a founder of my own business, I bring the best of what psychology has to offer to the “real world” where leaders and organizations have to get things done, with efficiency and profit.

Through this site, you can begin to learn more about the power of the positive approach to business and leadership development, and I welcome your feedback.

Review - and even reprint - my FREE articles.  Subscribe to my free newsletter, “What’s Up, Doc?.” And most of all, please send me your questions and comments.

I’ll reply if you ask me to, and won’t send you anything else or share your contact information with anyone.  It will just be you and me talking.

My core business principles are Service, Integrity and Excellence, and my driving passion is to help individuals and organizations achieve greatness. Enjoy the site, and if you like it, please share it with your friends.
